Each year as Thanksgiving quickly approaches, I become extremely eager to devour all of the flavors that this amazing holiday has to offer. From pumpkin to cranberry to gravy, I become obsessed with all of the tasty foods that I get to eat in one night. Given that the combination of incredible flavors only happens once a year, it is a special treat to eat before my favorite holiday. Usually, the foods I receive on Thanksgiving are ones that I only have on the actual day. Of course, if I am lucky, I can then have that festive dish for a few more meals until the leftovers are threw. However, being able to eat classic Thanksgiving dishes before the big day is something that I will never be able to give up. When we ate this delicious and creamy green bean casserole, I instantly wanted to create excuses to eat this again and again. With bacon and extra cheese, it was something that I would gladly make on a weekly basis.

Green bean casserole is something that I never really ate growing up. My mom tended to make really healthy meals. Her food is what I try to imitate each time we cook, due to her ability to combine healthy ingredients with intense and unbelievable flavors. Although her food was packed with amazing tastes, she tried to avoid food that seemed to be saturated with unhealthy ingredients. When I finally had green bean casserole as an adult, it was like eating candy for the very first time. After a few initial bites, I was determined to make a healthy and mouthwatering version of the same dish. Trying to emulate her healthiness combined with maintaining delicious Thanksgiving flavors became my new goal.

When we began making this green bean casserole, we were stunned by how simple it really was. In a matter of minutes, we had something incredible to place in the oven. Given that we never ate it as children, we knew that we wanted to try to make it as delicious as the first time we tried it. As we added each finishing touch and dipped our wooden spoon into the mixture, we knew that we created a green bean masterpiece. Every bite was so creamy, cheesy and irresistible. We know that if you decide to make this for Thanksgiving, this recipe will be a complete crowd pleaser. Whether you add mushrooms, skip on the bacon or experiment with fancy cheeses, this green bean casserole will be so worthwhile. Thanksgiving would not be complete without this amazing, creamy vegetable dish. We hope every family member will completely enjoy every bite!

Green Bean Casserole

Green Bean Casserole

Ingredients

  • 1 pound Green Beans, trimmed
  • 8 tablespoons Butter
  • 1 medium Onion, chopped
  • 3 tablespoons Flour
  • 1 cup Chicken Broth
  • 1 cup Heavy Cream
  • ½ cup French-Fried Onion Rings
  • 1 cup Parmesan Cheese
  • 1 cup Sharp Cheddar Cheese
  • Salt and Pepper
  • 5 Slices of Bacon, diced

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Boil green beans in a large pot. Cook until soft, about 6 minutes. Drain water and set aside.
  2. Meanwhile in a skillet, cook bacon according to package instructions. Set aside and dice when cooled.
  3. In a medium saucepan, melt butter. Add the onion and cook until translucent. Pour in flour and create a rue, stirring consistently for about 5 minutes. Pour in broth and cream and mix constantly. Add the cheese and stir until smooth and creamy. Season with salt and pepper.
  4. Place the green beans in a casserole dish. Transfer the mixture onto the green beans. Top with onion rings, bacon and more cheese. Cook for 20 minutes. Enjoy!
