As I write this post, I am completely freezing cold! California does not get as cold as most states, but when the temperature drops, the layers and blankets pile on me very quickly! Looking back at the photos of all of the food we have made lately, these photos in particular, warm me right up! In fact, I chose this post, just to help me keep warm and remember a fun and very satisfying meal. These French onion sausage dogs are just as delicious as they look. With caramelized onions, melted Gruyere cheese and spicy sausages, these dogs were so mouthwatering and seriously tasty.

My main reason for also posting this now, is because in January, we will be giving our blog a healthy overhaul. While these dogs are not in any way unhealthy, we will be using mostly vegetables and lean foods to create easy and fast meals. Given that this is a must try, I needed to post it before the fresh vegetables take over our page. We are looking forward to emphasizing healthy foods and are already eagerly planning for many nutritious dishes. This showcase will be so fun for us to dream up, and will hopefully help us to find more energy and a healthier lifestyle in the New Year.

These French onion sausage dogs we so effortlessly easy to make. They tasted just like the incredible soup, but with a spicy and surprising kick! The addition of sausage was a welcomed surprise that made each bite even more irresistible. Perhaps the best aspect of this extraordinary sausage dog is that it took next to no time to make. After heating the prepared sausages and sautéing the onions, it was completely simple to throw it all together. We loved the ease when preparing the meal and found it to be an amazingly fast weeknight meal. Since most of our weeknight meals pre-blog were pretty uninteresting, we think that this one is a real winner!

When you eat this, we hope that you are just as happily overwhelmed as we were.

French Onion Sausage Dog

Ingredients

  • 1 Large Onion, sliced
  • Olive Oil
  • 3 tablespoons Butter
  • 2 tablespoons Balsamic Vinegar
  • 3 tablespoon Beef Broth
  • 4-6 Prepared Sausages (we used a bourbon bacon sausage and it was perfect!)
  • 4-6 Hot Dog Buns
  • 4-6 Slices of Gruyere Cheese
  • Chives, chopped

Instructions

  1. In a skillet, saute the onions in oil and butter. Let the onions cook down on medium heat and stir occasionally.
  2. Once the onions appear brown in color, add the vinegar and beef broth. Cook until liquid is soaked and onions are soft (about thirty minutes).
  3. While the onions are cooking, heat the sausages according to package directions. Place the sausages in the buns and melt cheese on top. Top with onion mixture and chives. Enjoy!
