When I titled this post the “Best Bolognese Sauce,” I really meant the BEST Bolognese sauce. As I took my first bite of this incredible sauce, I felt as though my socks were literally about to be knocked off. It was one of those moments where I could not believe I created something so amazingly delicious. I could imagine a sweet Italian grandmother making this in her rustic kitchen or a chef in Italy making this in his small but wonderful restaurant. The fact that I made this blew me completely away. After this entire cooking journey where I have grown in my abilities, it was so fulfilling to make something that I was so proud of. It was so satisfying to make something so mouthwatering and fantastic. This amazing recipe cannot be missed and will impress even the most particular dinner guests.

Best Bolognese Sauce

The minute I ate this incredible sauce, I was taken back to our honeymoon in Italy. Dan and I were so fortunate to take a vacation to some of the most breathtaking cities in Italy right after we were married. On this amazing trip, we visited Rome, Naples, Venice, Florence and our favorite place, Almalfi. We were in such awe of these magnificent cities and the beauty that each of them bestowed. From the architecture to the rich history, we admired every aspect of these great places. While we loved so many qualities of these historical places, we mostly were overwhelmed by the beyond delicious foods. We devoured plates of gnocchi, ravioli, spaghetti, bruschetta and of course, meatballs. The minute I tried our sauce, I was taken back to these wonderful flavors and was transported right back to those gorgeous cities. I could not believe how authentic and reminiscent this sauce truly was.

Best Bolognese Sauce

While this best Bolognese sauce really receives the title of “the best” it does take a few hours to create. We constantly try to find recipes that are quick and effortless to feed a family in no time. However, sometimes we are compelled by magnificent flavors to feature recipes that take a bit of dedication. Although it did not take all afternoon, it did need some love and attention.

Best Bolognese Sauce

After prepping all of the ingredients and adding them to sauce, stirring needed to occur off and on for two and a half hours. While I was a little discouraged by the process at first, I completely forgot about the minor frustration after I took one tiny bite. Every stir and ounce of attention was one hundred percent worth it. My mom even looked at me with wide eyes when she took a bite and excitedly declared that she needed the recipe. Any beginning cook with a mother who makes amazing meals knows that this is the highest compliment. I urge you to try this recipe when you have the time to make it. Serve it for a fancier dinner and watch your guests become completely astonished. With Valentine’s Day approaching, it would also be the perfect dinner to impress your significant other. We hope you try it and let us know how much you and your guests loved it. In our books, it really is the best Bolognese sauce.

Ingredients

  • Olive Oil
  • 2 tablespoons Garlic, minced
  • 1 Carrot, peeled and chopped
  • 1 Onion, chopped
  • 1 Celery stalk, chopped
  • 1 1/2 pounds Ground Beef (ground turkey or pork would also work well)
  • 1/4 cup Tomato Paste
  • 1 cup Red Wine
  • 2 cups Crushed San Marzano Tomatoes
  • Salt and Pepper
  • 1 box Tagliatelle Pasta
  • Parmesan Cheese, grated
  • 1/4 cup Basil, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, add oil, garlic, carrot, onion and celery on medium heat. Cook until onions are soft and translucent.
  2. In a skillet, brown the ground beef for about 10 minutes. Drain the fat and add to the pot.
  3. After stirring the beef into the cooking vegetables, add the tomato paste. Cook for about 3 minutes.
  4. Pour in the wine and stir constantly. Cook for five more minutes, allowing for the liquid to evaporate.
  5. Add the tomatoes and bring the mixture to a boil. Once it boils, bring it down to low. Cook uncovered for about 2 hours and stir occasionally.
  6. When the sauce is almost ready, begin boiling the pasta. Save some of the water from the pasta to the sauce (about 1/2 cup to a cup) to make it less thick. Stir well and add to pasta. Top with cheese and basil. Enjoy!
