Another football post is up on the blog, and this sure is a super tasty one! When we decided to focus on the Texans and Titans game this week, we were unsure of what to make to represent the Tennessee Titans. After consulting the internet and my younger sister who has visited Tennessee, I received a unanimous suggestion to make (and try) hot chicken. The minute I looked up pictures of the tasty dish, it was clear that we needed to master this delicious, mouth watering meal. This easy hot chicken was one hundred percent simple and one hundred percent incredible. With every spicy and flavorful bite, we were amazed that it came from our kitchen. With hot sauce and a fantastic glaze, this easy hot chicken is the perfect dish to enjoy during a football game.

It is so exciting to create game day foods each week and eat something that is ridiculously fun during football games. We love researching teams and figuring out what to make for each team. This process is so interesting for us to push us out of our comfort zone and to make foods we have never heard of before. My sister has mentioned the amazing aspects of hot chicken. However, in California, we have never gotten the opportunity to taste the fantastic flavors of this dish. This local specialty of Nashville should truly remain a treasured dish. Several restaurants in Nashville serve the iconic dish, and Nashville even has a festival that celebrates hot chicken. Once we got to try it, we too were captivated by this delicious chicken. Adding hot sauce and a spicy glaze elevates fried chicken in a wonderful way. After eating this easy hot chicken, we may never eat fried chicken in any other form.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound Drum Sticks
  • 1 1/2 cups Buttermilk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1-2 tablespoons Hot Sauce
  • 2 cups Flour
  • 1 cup Cornflakes, crushed
  • 1 tablespoon Brown Sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons Garlic Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Chili Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Paprika
  • Salt and Pepper
  • Vegetable Oil for Frying
  • For the Glaze
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • Salt and Pepper
  • 1/2 cup Butter, melted
  • 2 tablespoons Hot Sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Brown Sugar

Instructions

  1. Prepare two bowls to begin dipping the chicken. In one bowl, add the buttermilk, egg and hot sauce. Mix and set aside. In the other bowl, add the flour, cornflakes, brown sugar, garlic powder, chilli powder, paprika, salt and pepper. Mix and begin dredging the chicken in each bowl. Dip each piece evenly in the liquid mixture and then in the dry ingredients. Set on a plate or in an air fryer.
  2. Heat a pan with about two inches of vegetable oil. Wait until the oil is very hot, and then place half of the chicken in the pan. Fry each side for about 4-5 minutes. When finished, place on a plate lined with a paper towel. Continue this process until each piece of chicken is complete.
  3. If using an air fryer (like we did), place 1/2 the chicken at a time in the air fryer for 16-18 minutes at 360 degrees.
  4. For the Glaze
  5. Mix the flour, salt and pepper, butter, hot sauce and sugar,
  6. When chicken is finished cooking, drizzle the glaze over each piece. Enjoy!
